Duke the dog beats man to become mayor

Despite not running a campaign, seven-year-old Duke won the five-week election “by a landslide”, reports The Independent.

Twelve people paid a dollar each to cast votes in the election.

Voters said Duke guards the town and makes the community safer, even ensuring cars do not break the speed limit.

Resident Tricia Maloney was quoted as saying that Duke’s opponent Richard Sherbrook, who owns the Cormorant Store, “did not even have half as many votes”.

His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Saturday.

Duke will get a one year supply of kibble by Tuffy's Pet Food as reward for his service in lieu of a salary, says the report.

The appointment comes after five-year-old Robert Tufts stepped down from his role as mayor of the Dorset town in Minnesota.

Tuft, who had two terms in office, had been mayor since the age of three.
